Book the space!
Does your group or organization need space for a meeting, training, retreat, workshop, fundraiser, performance, or other event? Are you seeking short-term lodging for a visiting speaker or collaborator? We are interested in collaborating with folks working in the grassroots arts, culture + organizing world and we’d love to connect.
We believe strongly that the ability to pay should not be an obstacle to accessing this resource, and we will welcome the opportunity to collaborate with anyone whose goals are aligned with the space. We will prioritize the needs + safety of queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, POC, and other marginalized groups in decisions regarding access + scheduling.

The Living Room is a one-bedroom apartment that has been converted into a malleable community space. There are 2 gathering rooms: a front room with a table and chairs, and a second living room with a couch (convertible to a bed) and other comfortable seating options. For meetings, we suggest a comfortable capacity limit of 10-12 people per room. For events, we suggest a capacity of around 30-40 people max, depending on the type of event. For lodging, the space has one full-size bed as well as a twin air mattress available upon request.
We also have a covered front porch and a large open backyard that are available for outdoor events.
The Living Room is located in Old West Durham near Duke East campus and the Ninth Street area. There are driveways on either side of the house as well as available street parking in the area.

Sliding scale guidelines
The space will be available on a sliding scale and we will allow individuals and groups to assess their own ability to contribute financially. We will appreciate any financial contributions from those in a position to donate in exchange for their use of the space, as this supports our mission to make it available to others free of cost. We ask folks to be reflective about their power + privilege with regard to race, class, gender, ability, etc, in making this decision.
Suggested sliding scale guidelines:
0-$15/hour
0-$150/ full day
0-$75/night for lodging reservations*
*Due to high demand, we typically limit sliding scale overnight lodging to folks who are connected to an event or have a relationship with the space. For other guests, we offer lodging via AirBnb as a means of subsidizing our sliding scale.
We also welcome other offerings to support the space, including tea, coffee, snacks, toilet paper, paper towels, and paper napkins. We’re also open to barter/trade for goods or services; reach out + let’s talk.
